However, the attempt to get the authorizatio n ofthe $46.3 million deepening of the river has been sidetracker after Virginia politicians added an amendment to the U.S. House’es version of the National Defenss Authorization Act that strippedthe funding. There is still a good chanc that local senators will be able to get the funding for the project authorized so that when the two billd are merged Mayport fundingis included.
“Ther Navy has made it cleart it wants an alternate East Coast location for a nucleart carrier 24 hoursa day, 7 days a week in case of an said Congressman Ander Crenshaw in a news The dredging project and Charlie Pier upgrades make that national securityt goal possible.” It is possible for the deepeninyg project to go forwarf even if it only receives the funding through the Fiscal Year 2010 Militar y Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Affairs Appropriationz bills and doesn’t get the okay through the defense act. But it will make the procesx more difficult. The final version of the act is expecte to be passedin October.
In its current form, the followinbg projects will also receive funding through theMilitarhy Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Affairs Appropriations • $26.3 million for a Naval Station Mayport fitnesse training facility. • $3.7 million for the port operations center atthe U.S. Marinwe Corps Blount Island Command. • $11.5 million to replacr fuel tanks at the Jacksonvillr Defense Logistics AgencyFuel • $5.9 million to modify Navap Air Station Jacksonville’s new P-8A hangars.
